Does Tramadol Show In A Urine Drug Screen? If So How Long Before It Is Out Of Your System?
Tramadol, also sold as Rybix ODT, Ryzolt, Ultram, and Ultram ER is currently classed as an uncontrolled opioid analgesic (painkiller) available on prescription and is essentially the same as codeine. It will show up in a urine drug screening if it is tested for, but most standard five-panel drug screening tests currently do not test for it.
Like most substances, Tramadol is usually out of your system after about three to five days from use. However, the urine of long-term users, the obese and those with slow metabolisms due to health-related disorders may test positive for longer.
Other factors that might affect urine detection time are individual drug tolerance, urine pH levels and how much water is in the body. Drinking a lot of water or having very acidic urine, for example, tend to shorten detection time to some extent.
Some sources state that the form in which a drug is taken (i.e. Whether it is inhaled, swallowed, injected or smoked) can also affect detection time.
Although most five-panel drug screening tests do not currently test for it, the Healthcare Professionals Drug Screen used in the US, which is a 10-panel test, does, so if you are working in the healthcare profession, you may want to be aware of this.
One of the reasons why many drug-screening programs do not test for it is that Tramadol is currently not classified as a controlled substance. However that may soon change soon because evidence is emerging that it is highly addictive, which may be why the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently listed a safety alert about Tramadol to all US physicians in 2010.

Tramadol is an opiate DERIVATIVE, not an opiate in the technical sense, and is also not a Schedule III narcotic. Therefore, It is NOT tested for on the standard five dip-stick test, where chemically-coated dipsticks are lowered into a urine sample. What is tested for is Opiates, Amphetamines, Alcohol, Marijuana (THC), and Amphetamines. HOWEVER, there ARE more technical tests that CAN identify the active ingredient of Tramadol in urine, but this is NOT routinely performed on individuals, except in specific circumstance. Some individuals who have previously been identified opiate abusers MAY be tested for Tramadol, but others are typically not tested.
The active ingredient of Tramadol will show up in the more-technical test after approximately 12 hours, and can stay in the urine for 3-5 days, unless the individual has issues with their liver or kidneys, which will result in longer break-down times.

No, I work in a lab, it will not show up on a standard urine stick. I must be broken down even in blood samples. For a standard at work pee in a cup test don't worry about it. The half life for this drug is only about 4 hours and should washout quickly. It may however show up as an tricyclic antidepressant.

Only if it is specifically ordered to be tested for tramadol. The usual "5 panel" and "10 panel" urine drug screening to not test for tramadol.

Those of you that think that tramadol does not show up on a drug test, it depends on what kind of drug test that is being used on you. I go to pain management and it most definitely showed up in my urine. I was scripted it months ago, but did not take it very often. On my first visit to my PM doc I was tested and I was honest and told them the medications I had taken. I told them I had a script for tramadol, but I hadn't taken it in a while because it makes me sick. I don't remember taking this medication before my visit to my PM doc or I would of told them that I had taken it. I went back for my second visit and was told that I was positive for tramadol and that I had a lot of it in my system. I do not know how it showed up positive because it had been a while since I took it. Unless I have kidney problems and don't know anything about it. So depending on the test given, which obviously mine in the end was the gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).test that shows levels, and the only reason they would go there is if I showed up positive for something that didn't belong, even traces. It will show what drug and the amount of it in the system. Don't be fooled by people that have had negative results, because it all depends on the drug test being given.

Well, i have been a tramadol addict for over 7 years now, not proud of it but i'm answering the question anyway for any good it might do....
Tramadol DOES NOT show in your regular triple or even the five-stick thing -Excuse me, english is not my first language- normaly they test for Morphine, Bnzos, and THC, Tramadol requires a test of it's own...
And it takes up to 5 days maximum....

For all of you that insist Tramadol does not show up on a routine urine...I am a nursing student and specifically requested a non-narcotic medication following a back injury. I was given Tramadol and it took large amounts to control the pain. I was drug tested two days after starting the Tramadol and tested positive for opiates. No one believed that Tramadol could cause the false positive but it absolutely did!! I had not taken any 'true' opiates in over a year so no chance it was residual opiates from somewhere. I emailed both the manufacturer of the original Ultram and contacted the FDA. Both supported that large amounts of Tramadol will appear as opiates! The non-narcotic aspect if false security! Several states do consider Tramadol a controlled substance and the withdrawals are the most horrible experience you can imagine!

I agree with the guest that posted about our rights being stomped on by the dea costopo. I had ran out of my pain med 3 days prior to a drug test to accually make sure that i am taking my meds. I take 5mg of oxycodone for back pain, and have been for years. I work very hard everyday in the paving and construction trade. My test showed neg. For oxycodone, and pos. For tramadol. I have never even heard of this drug until i was tested pos. For it, and now my dr. Will not provide my with my medication due to these new laws. Maybe i should just go on welfare and collect ssi, instead of working and being a productive american!!!. I also tested pos. For hydrocodone which was perscribed by an er. Physician as a result of a fall on some ice. I told him i took oxy for pain mgmt, and he instructed me to take the hydro...5/325 because it was good for anti imflam,.. Hopefully my dr. Will retest me and i can get this cleared up..free america??? Read the us constitution...we have the right to ingest whatever we want...thank the harrison act for all this bull...

Lots of different answers on this question. Searching because the Marshfield clinic in our town is now doing drug screens without telling patients or getting permission. My husband is a cardiac patient with hepititis c, has lots of health issues. He is on lots of prescribed meds including hydrocodeine. He isn't taking anything not prescribed, or street drugs, hasn't in 30 years since the 70's lol. Any how went for regular doctors and they called him back to lab, we assumed for blood work as he is anemic. They gave him a cup to pee in so he figured it was for his blood sugar as he is diabetic also. Until he got through and realized it was a locked down room, no sink to wash hands, locked down toilet etc. Another words a drug testing room. We asked the doctor about it and he said something to the affect that starting january 1st all patients are being drug tested due to dea regulations. Now we did not give permission for, nor were we even asked to do this. He is only taking his meds prescribed by the doctor, but that isn't the point. What the hell has happened to our basic civil rights in this country anymore. Long story short, they call today and said he tested positive for tramadol, which he does not take, and he cant get his regular pain meds until he is clean. I am furious, I will not take this lying down, it is a false positive from either another drug he is taking and has been prescribed or due to his liver or heart disease, something is causing a false positive. Any one with medical background that might be able to give us a heads up on what could cause this we would appreciate it, we are going back to raise hell tomorrow on this. He takes metformin for diabetes, carvedilol for his blood pressure meds, hydrocodeine, alprazolam, lipitor, plavix, asprin, effexor, loratadine for allergies, and nexium. He takes dyphenhydramine for sleep sometimes which is pretty much the only over the counter drug he takes. Everything else is the above prescribed, no others, and no street drugs. So any ideas we can throw in their faces as to what is giving the false positive on this for tramadol. We plan to have them do a repeat urine tomorrow, and I will get this taken out of his records one way or another, spend 30 freaking years doing the right thing only to have someone tell you you are abusing drugs. The man has gone through enough, he does not need this. Any one who might have some answers that would be great. Thanks in advance.

Just an update, we went back to the clinic and had them do another urine, also had them do mine as I also take pain meds and would have to urine test also before next script. Husbands came back clean this time, they still won't admit it was a false positive, and everyone is that is taking pain meds for longer than three weeks is now urine tested with a full panel, not just the basic ones. They call and say I need to talk to the doctor as mine came back bad, so I went right down there and the nurse takes us to a room, and she says, oh yours was a false positive caused by a combination of two prescriptions you are on. If this is the quality of the tests and labs they are using people are in trouble, this could ruin peoples lives, having these come back with positives for drugs when your not using them. I did find out they are routinely testing for tramadol now to try and weed out opiate abusers as it's used as a street opiate or something to that affect. Short story long, we got our mess straightened up, and got our scripts, but a real hassle and how many people wont get it straightened out. Neither of us take anything not prescribed for us by our doctor, but that isn't the issue here, it's such a violation to have to be urine tested, and especially with such a flawed system. And to the person who posted you drug abusers need to get a life, everyone has a life, Thank God just not yours! Thanks for all the knowledgeable replies and help everyone. I don't care what anyone is smoking, taking, or using, it's your life and your urine, no one has a RIGHT to it.

TKBest this one is for you. Effexor is very very similar to the structure of ultram tramadol and could cause a false positive I hope this helps

If advil can make you test positive for marijuana, then a medication that mimics opiates like tramadol can most definitely give you a false positive for them. It depends on the test, the doctor and facility. I go to a doctor, she random drug screens her patients and she wanted to cut me off my meds cause I had a slight amount of marijuana in my system. I havent smoked that in over ten years and it was like once. I laughed at her, told her she was wrong to do it again. I found out the advil I was eating daily gave me the result. I quit the advil I have no more marijuana in my urine. Funny thing....

Tramadol does not show up on a normal test, but all meds can show if they are testing for that specifically. I'm a disabled vet that is on probation for drugs and alcohol, I am also in treatment, so I can absolutely not have any narcotics in my system. I take ua's every other day, sometimes two days in a row, my asshole po has never said a thing, I've been on the medicine for 3 months now and take a ton of it. If it was there he would say something. It is an opoid not an opiate, there's a differance, it is a narcotic-like medicine, kinda like suboxone, which again will only show up if being tested for.

Thanks for the information. I had my first drug test in my 30 years of employment the other day. I am prescribed tramadl but it was such an invasion of privacy that I forgot to list it as a prescibed medicine . I did list Ativan which is also prescribed. This all has caused me great anxiety. It is not right to be so intrusive.

Tramadol Is technically labeled as a non narcotic pain killer. It is an analog not a synthetic. Meaning basically it is not a derivative of opiates. Any drug CAN Be tested for But there are so many including tramadol that are not. Short answer is no.... It will not show up on your test. Standard 5 to 16 panel drug tests do not test for it

It depends on how sensitive the drug test- was tested for probation and was taking it and it never showed up, but showed up on a test I took for nursing drug screening. Make sure you have a script!
Not sure how long it stays in your system-probably would be safe to wait a week.

Tramadol is a opioid derivative and is used as narcotic analgesic. It is also used as street drug abuse and is tested for drug dependency. In blood it can be tested for 12-14 hours. I urine 2-4 days and in hair follicles test up to 90 days.
